It's been a while so lets recap what has happened since the June.
The L A K E R S are the 2008-2009 NBA Champions! They defeat the Orlando Magic 4 games to 1. In Game 4, D Howard chokes from the freethrow line and Fisher hits a 3 to tie the game. Fisher later hits a 3 to win the game in OT. Game set match!
Kobe was named the MVP of the Finals. He's got 4 now and wants more.
Phil wears a X hat that I mistook it for a Malcom X shoutout. Come on...was I the only one? His head was clearly too big for this hat.
The Lakers had a million dollar parade that nobody wanted to pay. The event was held in the LA Coliseum. Some people got arrested as expected but everybody pretty much had a fun time celebrating.
SUMMER PRO LEAGUE
Chauncy, Mattie B, Gussy G, and I set out to go to another Summer Pro League in Vegas. Unfortunately, we weren't able to watch any Lakers games because the stupid league switched the schedule on us. However the 4 of us were able to meet for our first annual Lakers roundtable. The Lakers roundtable was awesome as everybody had an opinion on everything about the Lakers. Here are a few lists we came up with:
Top 5 All Time Lakers:
1. Magic (PG) - undisputed
2. Kobe (SG) - some may say the "logo" but I think it's clear that Kobe is on top
3. Big Game James Worthy (SF) - CLUTCH
4. The Cap - Kareem Abdul Jabbar (C) - Wilt? Shaq? Miken? The Cap was awesome and made freethrows!
5. Pau Gasol (PF) - We really had to think about this one because the Lakers never really had a great power forward. If you think otherwise, feel free to comment.
All Time Laker Moments:
5. 1988 Game 7 Finals vs the Detroit Pistons. The Lakers started that 3rd quarter on fire. Truly unbelieveable. They hold on in the end to win the championship.
4. 2000 Western Conference Finals vs the Portland Trailblazers. The Lakers trailed by 15 in that period but BShaw knocked down some key shots to get the Lakers past the Jailblazers. This game marked the alley oop pass by Kobe to Shaq. Shaq ignores Kobe's high 5 as he nearly kills Dfish with a chest bump.
3. 2004 4th Quarter comeback vs the Dallas Mavericks. The Lakers at one point were down by 30 pts during the game. They were down by 20+ in the fourth but still managed to win the game. Why so important? The Lakers started very slowly this year. I believe they had a losing record to start the season and this game kind of kick started them.
2. 2002 Game 4 Western Conference Finals vs the Sacramento Kings. Kobe drives to the bucket and flat out misses the layup. He was defended by Doug Christie of all people. Anyhow, Shaq rebounds and bricks from 3 feet away. Vlade tips the ball out and you know who....BIG SHOT ROB is there to hit the game winning 3 pt shot. Lakers go on to beat the Kings and win the Championship that year.
1. 1987 Game 4 Finals vs. the Boston Celtics. Magic dribble drives and catches McHale off balance with his version of the skyhook. Later to be known as the JR. Skyhook. Pure Magic but one of the best clutch players of all time. I still get goosebumps seeing this shot.
Here are a few pics from our roundtable discussion.
I'll have to recap some of the Lakers off season moves in my next post. Til then....enjoy!
